Don't be a worrier, be a warrior!
Create some 'constants' in your life
to help get through the bumpy bits
As you know, I tend to write blogs from the heart and in terms of situations, experiences or people that I have come across that week. I'm not a 'professional blogger' so I don't have next month's list of blogs all sorted and ready to go. I write it off the cuff each week from notes I've made in numerous note books, on post-its and on my phone, but this week I was very tempted to write something vague and general and not make it as personal because quite honestly, I didn't want to mention this week's events. However because of the person I am, I didn't think it would be very genuine of me to do that.
This week has been very challenging as I've not only had to contend with a busy work week but I've also been extremely worried about Mr Bob. He's been in severe pain, unable to walk more than a few steps and at one point I feared it might be meningitis. Following lots of calls to the doctor and a couple of trips to the hospital, it seems to be a severe trapped nerve that is causing the problem. Thankfully, he's now feeling much better. Can I just say at this point that my boss has been amazing and gave me plenty of opportunities to take some time out but I'm a stubborn ass so I carried on! Plus the distraction of work actually helped.
The point I want you to take away from this week's blog is how you can actually keep going whilst there's a sh*tstorm blowing through your life. When life is all tickety boo it's relatively easy to continue doing the things you usually do. During the tough times it's so much harder, everything is an effort, even the things you enjoy doing.
This is where routines come into their own, and you know how much I bang on about having some routines in your life. The 'constants' in your life are there to fall back on, these are the things that get you through the tough stuff.
Movement - Until this morning I hadn't felt like running all week but without fail I still got up and did my yoga and meditation. I needed that calmness and balance before facing the day. It's ok if you don't feel like doing your usual exercise routine but try and do something because I promise it will make you feel better.
Friends - You need to keep in touch with people when things aren't great but that doesn't mean having to fill them in on every tiny detail. Having a bit of banter and fun can help you keep perspective on things.
Work - Don't underestimate the power of work. Throwing yourself into something else can take your mind off the situation and it doesn't have to be 'work work', it can be your side project or a home project or study time. Personally, I cope better when I have something to do so I've thrown myself into both 'work work' and 'Fit for It work' this week. Knowing that I had my fitness clients to see really helped me focus and I knew that they'd still give me some abuse as always!! Plus, exercise makes you feel a-maz-ing.
Daily Reflection - At the end of every day, I look back and jot down a few notes in terms of what has gone well, what didn't go so well, what I need to do differently tomorrow, any funny little anecdotes. etc Not only does it help get everything out of my head so there's less in my brain to worry about, it helps when I come to write my blog each week.
- What are your 'constants' in life?
- What exercise / calming routines do you enjoy?
- Who are the people you can always turn to?
- What are the things that help clear your mind?
- Do you find your 'constants' helpful to fall back on when things are not quite going as planned?
- If not, why not?
- Do you need to create more 'constants'?
- Do you need to simplify and have less 'constants'?
Bad times happen but we don't have to make them even harder. By creating your 'constants' now, you'll be much better prepared and have a smoother journey through the bumpy bits of life.
Before I end this blog, I'd like to give a massive shout out to anyone looking after children or sick relatives whilst working from home - you guys absolutely rock!! My situation is temporary, many of you have to cope with things like this on a regular basis and, quite honestly, I don't know how you do. Rock stars, all of you!!
