Out and about in Normandie - mixing with the locals
Monsieur Bob et moi have waved au revoir to the Loire and its delightful chateaux and are now in the equally fabulous department of Normandie for part deux of our vacances. Normandie is the land of cows, cider, apples and my favourite French cheese of all - Neufchâtel. J’adore Neufchâtel 🥰.
Yesterday we decided to go in search of some culture. I know, I’m from Barnsley as well, check me out. Hey I can even do joined up writing these days. We headed for the town of Bayeux to go and see the world famous Bayeux Tapestry. I’ve obviously seen it goodness knows how many times in books and on tv but I have to admit that up close and personal I was more impressed than I thought I would be. There in front of me was a real life story of around 70 metres in length from almost 1,000 years ago and the attention to detail was incredible. It’s well worth seeing if you ever get the chance. Bayeux town itself is also a delightful place to visit.
Whilst in Normandie we’re staying in the pretty little seaside town of Houlgate with a huge beach for me to run along and at the end there’s 134 steps to run 🏃🏻♀️(crawl) up and down as an extra challenge, in order to work up an appetite for my petit dejeuner. This morning I managed four times, at the end of which my quads were burning, my legs had turned to jelly and my lungs were bursting. Not a pretty sight! I then had to call into the boulangerie for our baguette 🥖looking like a hot 🥵mess!
One of the things we try to do on holiday is check out what the locals do, in order to avoid looking like Brits on tour. So we always find out where the locals shop and which restaurants and bars they go to, that kind of thing. This morning we drove to the next town and discovered a sports and leisure expo. Well, I say expo but it was a few stalls in the market square. However, it was wonderful nevertheless as the locals were there to tout their sporting and leisure clubs. There was lots on offer such as sailing, diving, karate, basketball, running, arts, crafts and amateur dramatics. I think I’ve accidentally signed up to join the trail running group. Damn it, we’ll have to move to France now 🤣.
We’ve only got a few days here so we’re making the most of it and soaking up every single moment. Remember Appreciation August? Well I’m putting it into good practice shall we say.
Hopefully speak to you in a few days with our grand French finale.
